Reflections on 2023
As we settle into the final pages of this year's story, it's time to pause and reflect on the moments that shaped 2023. Just like the dance of the previous years, this one too seemed to waltz by in the blink of an eye. I stand at the intersection of roles – a business owner, a dad, a husband, and yes, a dancer – embracing the full spectrum of life's experiences.
Loss and Remembrance:
November, a month of reflection, carries bittersweet memories. We bid a fond farewell to our beloved 14-year-old feline companion, Ollie, who left a void in our hearts. It's a poignant reminder of the importance of cherishing those we hold dear.
Connections and Community:
I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Kathy, not only my wife but also my dearest confidante and pillar of strength. Jemima, my daughter, remains an endless source of inspiration, her journey of personal growth unfolding alongside mine. Among the treasured circle of friends and colleagues, Tom Denhof, a Passivhaus architect, lends his expertise, shaping the architectural landscape with sustainability at its heart. It's been a joy to work with him on our Studio build this year. Kelly Allen, a dedicated building surveyor, contributes her skills, adding depth to our collaborative endeavors. And thanks to my neighbours, building on last year's Jubilee celebrations, have built a real sense of community and we often entertain and are entertained at dinner parties and local meet-ups. Together, they enrich the canvas of my personal and professional life, making each step of the journey more meaningful.
Gratitude and Acknowledgments:
A heartfelt thank you to those who've been pillars of support. Brian Robinson, an inspirational guide on my journey, who has provided invaluable insights from his role as RICS Chair assessor.
Special mention to the Support team at RM Surveyors
Naomi, our strategic Business Manager - she is always there to rely on to manage the business, and really delivers making the business work more smoothly and my life easier; Matt, my 5Rhythms dancing friend and our creative wizard in photography & design; and Ellen, our departing Copywriter, whose words have shaped our voice over the last 2 years. As we bid Ellen farewell, we warmly welcome Mel, our new Copywriter, bringing fresh creativity to our communications. In 2024, I'm fortunate to continue collaborating with this dynamic team, each playing a unique role in our collective success.
Another big change has been changing accountants to EOACC as our trusted accountants, Likewise, we’ve changed our business banking to Monzo, an ethical bank. These shifts mark not just practical enhancements but embody a commitment to principles that align seamlessly with my business ethos, enriching the tapestry of our endeavours.
Standout Components of 2023:
Home Development: The creation of our own personal spa space and sauna in our newly built studio with the use of low-carbon building materials have transformed our home space. The journey, though challenging, unfolds a narrative worth sharing in a future blog.
Wellness Journey: A health scare refocused priorities. Battling an enlarged prostate, I embraced weight loss and regular exercise – a journey of swimming, yoga, gym sessions, dancing, cycling, and walking. Collaboration with a nutritionist paved the way for a healthier, fitter version of myself.
Residential Property Landscape: The residential property market weathered storms in 2023, facing reduced demand amidst the aftermath of Brexit, a cost of living crisis, heightened interest rates, and geopolitical conflicts.
As the curtain falls on 2023, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the remarkable individuals and experiences that shaped this chapter. Here's to embracing the new year with hope, resilience, and an unwavering spirit.
Warm regards,
Roo x
